Planting Hope
in African Lives

Sustainable growth

In Africa, we promote sustainable gardening projects and microfarms that yield abundant harvests and strengthen independent livelihoods. But it’s not just the land that should flourish – it’s also the inner garden of every human being. Plentiful Garden stands for holistic growth, sufficiency, and inner renewal.

Vision & Mission

Our vision: Renewing landscapes and lives through sustainable agriculture and holistic life development—responsibly, with a focus on the future and with consideration for people and God’s creation.
Our mission: We promote microfarms and urban gardening and accompany people on their journey toward productive, responsible agriculture that honors God, blesses the poor, and creates opportunities. In doing so, we nurture people in their faith and connection with Jesus and help them to be light and salt in their communities.

What we do

We focus on microfarms and various urban gardening options to empower people and break cycles of dependency. Through holistic and sustainable agriculture, we share knowledge about soil fertility, water management, and harvest preservation. Our approach combines practical training with spiritual discipleship to bring about long-term life transformation.

We support people (especially smallholder farmers) in Africa in improving their living conditions in a sustainable way. Through training in environmentally friendly agriculture, urban gardening, and resilient farming methods, we help them increase their yields and become independent of external aid in the long term. In addition, we promote the establishment of food banks to ensure food security and reduce economic dependencies. In addition to agricultural development, we value holistic life development that opens up both social and spiritual perspectives. Our goal is to empower people to discover their own potential and shape a sustainable future for themselves and their communities.

About us

Plentiful Garden is a ministry of the mission organization msd, which has been offering Bible courses in Africa for many years. Our work continues to evolve: in addition to spiritual formation, we focus on sustainable agriculture to empower people in practical ways.

Our project manager Bernard Bucyana was born and raised in Rwanda. He is married to a Swiss woman and lives in the Thun region. From our office, he manages and coordinates all the work in Africa and drives the plentiful.garden project forward. Through targeted visits, training, and on-site support, he is creating lasting change with our local partners in Africa.

Values

Preserving creation

Agriculture is not exploitation, but faithful stewardship of God’s earth.

In Africa in particular, the consequences of misguided farming methods such as slash-and-burn, monoculture, and excessive use of chemical fertilizers are evident in the form of soil depletion, erosion, and poor yields. Sustainable agriculture means using natural resources responsibly and keeping the soil fertile. Through training in agroecological methods, people learn to farm in harmony with creation—in a way that is productive, gentle, and sustainable.

Dignity & responsibility

Every person is called to be a channel of blessing.

Instead of remaining dependent on external aid, people should recognize that God blesses their own hands and abilities. Through training and support, they are empowered to provide for themselves—with new perspectives and growing self-esteem. Beggars become givers of blessings: to their families, their communities, and beyond.

Sharing abundance

God provides enough for everyone—we should therefore use resources wisely and justly.

Amidst scarcity and uncertainty, it is possible to create surpluses through proper management and wise storage (e.g., in food banks) and distribute them equitably. This protects against exploitation by middlemen and strengthens local food security. It is about taking responsibility together so that no one has to go hungry—because God’s gifts can be shared fairly.

Holistic renewal

God changes lives—spiritually, economically, and socially.

In addition to material poverty, spiritual emptiness is widespread—without prospects, social ills such as violence, abuse, and corruption flourish. Transformation begins in the heart, but it is also evident in our work, in our interactions with one another, and in our community life. When God’s principles are given space in all areas of life, change becomes profound and lasting.

Be part of this movement—together let’s plant hope!
